A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth; he winks with his eyes, he shuffles his feet, he points with his fingers; perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord. Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.
– Proverbs 6:12–15 –
Some people sow discord like farmers sow seed. They plot and scheme. They speak and insinuate to plant doubts and suspicions. They look for fault lines in relationships and carefully place charges to drive people apart. A hint here, a word there, a seemingly innocent question, malicious gossip shared under the pretense of a prayer—these are the subtle tools used to create conflict among God’s people.
God calls such divisive people worthless and wicked. Though others may miss their malice, the Lord sees everything and will judge their every intention and act. Then suddenly, judgment falls! God brings calamity and breaks the guilty without remedy! No one defends him or grieves, for his judgment is just.
Henry Phillips was such a person. He betrayed the English reformer and Bible translator William Tyndale, and after Phillips’ death an acquaintance wrote: …. Do not let this be your end. Stay true to Christ and sow peace, not discord.
